We then moved to the corner of Greenwood and Wildwood Streets. This had been the Ottumwa Floral Home, and there were many beautiful flowers. We had four acres and there were only two or three houses to the mile. Now the houses stand side by side. In 1936 we moved to 821 W Second St. and I lived there until 1948 when I married Donald Ray Scharff.
Graduated OHS(Ottumwa) in 1943. Attended Ottumwa Business College. Contacted Polio in 1926(summer Complaint) - Diagnosed in 1943. Told she would never walk without crutches. General Notes: BIO:Donald Served in US Air force 1942-1945. He is a retired farmer.
When in Jr High, He milked cows on the way to school and on the way home to help pay the bills(during depression).
He talked about ice skating to school during the winter.
He was drafted into service to fly in in helecopter to pick up wounded on the front lines. He decided his only hope was to excel in school, which landed him a Master Sargent rank as a B24 Mechanic in crew 6-21, 716th Squadron of the 449th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force in WWII based in Grottaglie Italy.
The 449th Bomb Group was composed of four Squadrons — the 716th, 717th, 718th, and 719th. The 449th was activated on 1 May 1943 at Davis-Monthan Field near Tucson, Arizona. The first morning report was issued on 27 May 1943. The strength of the Group on that date was listed as 52 officers and 33 enlisted men. Over the next 7 months the Group steadily increased to full strength as the training program progressed. On 1 July 1943 the Group was moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico. On 6 September 1943 the Group was again relocated, this time to Bruning Field, Nebraska. The move to Bruning was completed on 18 September 1943. At that time the 449th consisted of a total complement of 184 officers and 1,203 enlisted men.
At Bruning the 449th was equipped with some 62 B-24 aircraft. Each aircraft required a crew of 10 men. By December 1943, training was complete and the 449th was ordered overseas to the European theater. Each crew flew its aircraft overseas by a route which took them to southern Florida, then to Puerto Rico and thence to Brazil. The Atlantic crossing was made from Brazil to Dakar, Africa. From Dakar the planes flew north to Tunis by way of Marrakech. From Tunis they flew to their forward operating base at Grottaglie Field near Taranto, Italy. Don was part of initial crew dropped at Grottaglie to prepare the runway so that planes could land. He had to make tools to repair equipment, figure out how to operate Italian Dozers, etc.
The 449th operated from Grottaglie from January 1944 until the end of the war in Europe in May 1945. From Grottaglie, the 449th flew a total of 254 combat missions against targets in central and eastern Europe.
Flew from Texas South over South America to Africa up to Egypt. From there he was dopped into Grottaglie to restore the Airport so that the Bombers could land. While there, they slept under a fully loaded bomber when a bolt of lightning went through the bomb bay and blew a hole in the concrete, but did not discharge the bombs (one of his God's looking after me events).
He held rank of Master Sergant and was one of the Crew Chief of Crew 6-21 of the 716th Squadron of the 449th Bomb Group.
He was awarded 13 Bronze Stars for his service.

I can remember on old Edison Light bulb still working in 1980, in her closet, even with daily use. Early History of the Des Moines Valley: 1815 Cattle Drive from St. Louis MO to BC, Canada
Just south of the boundary line between the United States and Canada, on the site of the present city of Pembina, North Dakota, the Earl of Selkirk in 1812 established a colony of Scotch Highlanders for the prosecution of the fur business. It was in fact another chapter in the history of the war of competition between two sets of Canadian merchants - the Hudson's Bay Company and the North-West Company. In the summer of 1815 two hundred more Scotchmen arrived at the Red River or Pembina settlement, an event which brought on armed conflict with representatives of the hostile North-West Company. To such hardships, besides the rigors of a northern wilderness region, were the pioneers of western Canada exposed until the competing companies effected a merger in the year 1821. After that time, to secure men for the extension of their monopoly in Canada and the United States, especially among the Indians of the Upper Missouri and the West, the promoters p339issued a prospectus by which they attracted from Europe "some good and credulous Germans and greedy Swiss".
Meanwhile, in the year 1815 after the close of the War of 1812, so run the reminiscences of an Iowa pioneer, Lord Selkirk arranged for the delivery of five hundred head of cattle at the colony, giving the contract to a citizen of New York. Since St. Charles, in Missouri Territory, was the nearest point at which the cattle could be obtained, the contract was sublet to "Old Dick Carr" and B. Lewis Musick. The story of their driving the herd through the Iowa country to Canada is related in the following words:
Carr and Musick were energetic men, and soon had their cattle collected, buying mostly on credit until they had completed the contract. Giles Sullivan was hired to assist in driving as far as Des Moines River. They came up the Mississippi bottom and crossed the Des Moines about where St. Francisville is now situated, and stopped for several days on the Sand Prairie, near the present village of Vincennes. Here Sullivan left them, and Carr and Musick, with other assistants, proceeded up the divide between Skunk and Des Moines Rivers, passing through String Prairie, toward Big Mound, and must have passed very near Absalom Anderson's present farm. The Indians troubled them to some extent, and succeeded in stealing some of their stock; but no serious loss was experienced. In due course of time, they reached Selkirk's settlement, where his agent, well pleased with the cattle, issued a bill of exchange for their value in the name of the original contractor. Carr and Musick made their way home, striking the Mississippi River about St. Paul, from which point they came in canoes. They handed over the draft to the contractor, who, by some sort of hocus pocus, cheated Carr and Musick out of every dollar.
John S. McCune, of St. Louis, the King of the steamboat trade, got his first start in the world by helping drive cattle from Louisiana, Mo. to the Selkirk settlement. Whether he went through with Carr and Musick, the writer is not advised; but it is certain that he p340made some two or three trips to the Selkirk settlement as a cattle-driver when he was quite a young man.
Other records substantiate the statement that commerce was carried on between the Selkirk colony on the Red River and the American frontier settlements in Missouri by way of the Iowa wilderness. Early in the fall of 1821 another "herd of cattle, mostly cows, arrived from the State of Missouri, in charge of a party of armed drovers, and were distributed in the Spring of 1822 among the Swiss settlers. This distribution of cattle, which had been contracted for by Lord Selkirk before his death, was all that had been done for the colonists in fulfillment of the pledges made them before their departure from Europe." On their return to Missouri the drovers were permitted to take along five disappointed families - indeed, their glowing descriptions of Missouri induced several other families to abandon Lord Selkirk's Colony in 1823. Another interesting reminder of the relations between the far-away Canadian settlement and the nearest American pioneers is a map of Iowa Territory showing "Dixon and McKnight's route to Pembina Settlements in 1822". These men ascended the valleys of the Des Moines and its tributary, the Raccoon, proceeded almost straight northward along the divide between Spirit Lake and the headwaters of the Des Moines to the sources of the St. Peter's Red rivers, and then descended the valley of the Red River to Pembina.

History of Northeast Missouri. Vol 1:
When The White Man Came To Remain Explorers, surveyors, hunters and possibly adventurers, visited Clark county long before the white man arrived to make this territory his permanent home. It was in September, 1829, when Jacob Weaver, his wife, Elizabeth, and their five children came from Kentucky. They settled upon the banks of the Des Moines, near the site of the present town of St. Francisville. It is not disputed that "General" Harrison, trapper, trader and interpreter, had invaded this territory prior to the coming of the Weavers; but they were first to locate. Only a little later the "General" did locate at Marysville, further northwest, on the Des Moines. Following soon after Weaver came John Sackett, then Jeremiah Wayland, George Haywood and Samuel Bartlett, all from the same neighborhood in Kentucky. All located at or near St. Francisville and the descendants of each are now honored citizens among us. The families of these sturdy men did not follow them until the following spring. The cabin built by Jeremiah Wayland on the first bottom, near the river, was swept away by the flood of 1832. He builded again, and better, within the limits of what is now St. Francisville. In 1830 Peter Gillis, Giles Sullivan and William Clark joined the little colony. The wedding of the last named to Elizabeth Payne, at the home of Jeremiah Wayland, was the first occurring in the county. Romance was added to this in the knowledge that the minister performing the ceremony was an impostor. Esquire Robert Sinclair later legally tied the knot and another dinner was in order.
The first white children born within the territory of the present county were John Weaver, Elizabeth Bartlett and Martha Haywood. The first death was that of the wife of Giles Sullivan, 1831; the second that of Mrs. Joseph Wayland
Encylopedia of the history of Missouri, a compendium of history and biography for ready reference.
According to the most authentic record obtainable, the first settlement in the territory now Clark County was made in September, 1829, when Sackett and Jacob Weaver, who came from Kentucky, settled upon land on the Des Moines River, near the present site of St. Francisville. A year later William Clark built a log cabin near the present site of the town of Athens. Soon after a number of Kentuckians settled in the same neighborhood. Among them were Samuel Bartlett, Jeremiah Wayland and George Heywood. Wayland moved to where St. Francisville is now situated and there built a log cabin, which, in 1832, was swept away by a flood. In 1831 Giles Sullivan settled in the county about two miles above St. Francisville, and a few months later his wife died - the first death in the new settlement. The winters of 1830-1, so it is related in the traditions of the old settlers, were of great severity, and the snow was of such depth that travel was almost impossible, and Indians who occupied the bottoms along the Des Moines River lost nearly all their horses.

Noted events in his life were:
• Residence: 1773, Watauga Settlement. The Watauga Settlement was the first community established in North Carolina's western frontier and holds the distinction of being perhaps the first American settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. In the mid-1700s a mixture of English, Highland Scot, and Scotch-Irish pioneers came to the Watauga River Valley, bringing with them a strong sense of self-reliance and a fierce desire for self-government. In fact, these hardy settlers temporarily established one of the first self-governing political bodies to emerge in the American colonies. The settlers' energetic ability to defend their territory helped maintain the integrity of North Carolina's western border during the revolutionary period and advanced the cause of European settlement in the mountainous regions.
An enterprising Virginian named William Bean was the first recorded traveler to the Watauga area. Others followed his lead, among them Daniel Boone, who reputedly killed a bear in the vicinity. Political unrest in the Piedmont, including the Regulator Movement, brought an infusion of immigrants to the mountains. The nature of this migration led British colonial authorities to issue royal edicts forbidding settlement of the western lands by "absconded debtors, indentured servants, and outlaws," or "overmountain people," as they were generally called. Bean and James Robertson, who had come from Orange County in 1770, were not to be undone, however, and shrewdly began negotiations with the local Cherokee tribes to lease the land they had settled. Thus, in 1772 was born the Watauga Association, an independent political entity that constructed its own laws and enforced them by its own court system. Many historians have hailed this as a milestone event in American history, representing a pioneering effort at establishing self-government.
In early American History it was generally the "Indian Traders" who were the first to penetrate the Indian Country. Julius DUGGER and Andrew GREER have been awarded the honor of being the first white men to settle in the Watauga Country. They are said to have been about three miles above the present town of Elizabethton, and Dugger's not far from what was long called "Dugger's Bridge". Col. James ROBERTSON came across the mountains about 1770, from North Carolina; Valentine SEVIER, Sr. from up in the Valley of Virignia about the same time, and Col. John CARTER in 1770-71.
These men were followed in a very short time by other settlers who found their way down into this then unknown country; Simon BUNDY, Matthew TALBOT, Baptist McNABB, Charles ROBERTSON, Michael HYDER, James EDENS, Thomas GOURLEY, William BOYD, Joseph HYDER, Col. John TIPTON, and Samuel TIPTON and other sons, including Isaac and Thomas; Edmund WILLIAMS, Johnathan and David PUGH, Isaac, Andrew, Abner and Nathaniel TAYLOR, Peter, John and Henry NEVE and John S. THOMAS and others. These men left their establised homes for the American wilderness and established the most remarkable government known to white people of the civilized world at the time - the Free Settlement of Watauga.
The Watauga Settlement was actually an independent state
In a 1774 letter to his superiors, Lord Dunmore said, after being advised of what had taken place on the Watauga, that the people there had, "to all intents and purposes erected themselves into, though an inconsiderable, yet a seperate State."
This was the status openly assumed by these adventurous but determined pioneers, when in the early part of 1772, they formed what they called an "Association", drew up Articles relating to their own government & established rules and regulations designed to make their own self-government a fact and not a theory, appointing officers and courts and constabulary necessary for that purpose.
This action in fact brought into full force and effect the first written constitution ever adopted by a community of American-born Freemen.
The organization of this "seperate state" on the Watauga, was born of mecessity, since they found themselves beyond the reach and protection of any other government or state, or its administrative powers.
Control of the Watauga Settlement
To what State or Government did these pioneers owe allegiance? They did not know. In fact since no official boundary lines were darwn and no surveys made even the Governor of Virginia did not know who had control over the territory on the Watauga. The Governor of Virginia erroneously issued grants and patents to land that North Carolina had claimed but had not surveyed. No one was interested in the rugged pioneers who crossed the mountains and they were left to fend for themselves.
If the Watauga residents needed protection they had to furnish it themselves because Virginia, North Carolina and the British Isles didn't care. Needing some form of government they formed their own in their own way and according to their own ideas. Thus they met and erected themselves into an inconsiderable, and yet a seperate State.
The First Watauga Government
The "Articles of Association" drawn up and adopted by the settlers of the new State in 1772 have long ago been lost. Their preceedings have not been preserved. But it is known that they proceeded to the election of thirteen "Commissioners" and those commissioners were:
One of the first settlers on Gap Creek was Simon BUNDY, who settled about 2880 below Clark's Spring. Henry LYLE received one of the first land patents on the east bank of Gap Creek in 1776. Matthew Talbot, Sr., a pioneer Baptist preacher from Virginia, was also an early settler here and built the first grist mill on Gap Creek about 1775. His son, Matthew TALBOT, Jr., who removed to Georgia, became one of the first governors of that state. Another son, Thomas TALBOTT, was one of the first sherifs of Washington County, then North Carolina, in 1783.

Birth Notes: Immediately after his father's death, or on June 7, and December 7, 1763, as the son and heir, he sold to Henry Hall of Anne Arundel County, Merchant, one of the parental plantations, described as portion of a tract sold by the Rev. Henry Hall to Jacob Henderson and Robert Tyler, lying on the west side of the Patuxent. Elizabeth Denune his wife waived dower before Mordecai Jacob and Robert Tyler, two Justices of the Peace for the County. On October 12, 1765, he with his wife joining in the deed (indicating that acquisition was through the wife) sold to Richard Butt for 100 pounds sterling "Samuel's Choice", which adjoined the plantation of Richard Butt. And on April 19, 1766, he mortgaged slaves to Ann Brown, widow. A complete list of his children is not available, but inasmuch as the name is not common, two sons have been placed. There is no record of William Denune taking the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity in Maryland during 1778, though he certainly must have been living in the State at that time. The 1790 census fails to show him or his sons as heads of families. No will was probated in Prince Georges County nor any letters of administration issued on his estate.

As early as 1769, Capt James Sullivan had settled west of the Monongehela at Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania and served in Dunmore's War in 1774. Upon the formation of the 13th Virginia Regiment in 1776, he was chosen one of its captains. In December of 1777, Col. John Gibson at Fort Pitt sends him personally to George Washington to get clothing for the 13th Virginia Regt and he hopes Washington will supply his needs so as to enable him to return with a supply as soon as possible. He returned from the 13th in 1778 and served at Fort McIntosh until 1779. (See Frontier Defense on the Upper Ohio).
After recieving a land grant "on the Falls of the Ohio" from Patrick Henry, the next year he removed with his brother, Daniel Sullivn, to Jefferson County, Kentucky. They founded two stations, one on the Beargrass. In Clark's campaign of 1780 he acted as Master of Horse. In 1781 he was appointed by George Rogers Clark to supervise the building of boats for the coming Illinois campaign. Sullivan was tireless in his efforts for Clark with whom he was a trusted friend. He served in as Captain under Clark in the campaign against the Indian towns on the Miami River in 1782.
James Sullivan continued to live in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky until 1807. He is described as a large poweful and active man and prominent in the new community. He paid a great many obligations left by his brother, Daniel Sullivan, and acted as foster fathert to his nephew, Daniel Sullivan, Jr. James moved to St. Louis, MIssouri and spent his last years with his son John C. Sullivan where he died in 1815 on June 13th. On his grave in Fee Fee Cemetery, near Pattonsville, there is a Revolutionary marker. His gravesite is directly behind the cemetery house.

170. Lawrence Ross, son of William Ross and Arminella Whitesides, was born on 5/15/1722 in Scotland, Dublin and died on 8/8/1818 in Louisville, Bulitt Co, KY at age 96.
General Notes: Lawrence ross came to this country with his father when a boy, and while attending school in Virginia, was shot through the shoulder and taken prisoner by the Indians. He remained with the Indians until he was twenty-three years old, when he was given up by them at the first treaty of Limestone. He and his wife both lived to an advance age, his death occurring in Jefferson county, Kentucky, in 1817, at the age of ninety-eight, and his wife's two years later. Captain Ross' father was a Kentucky planter, and, like his father before him, a large slaveholder. He moved to Lincoln county, Missouri, in 1817, and died in 1823, at the age of sixty-five.
Lawrence served in the Revolutionary War as a ranger on the frontier with the company from Northampton County. In 1782 Lawrence bought his mother's and William's (1.4) share in his father's estate for 100 pounds, Virginia currency. By 1784 Lawrence had sold it and traveled down the Ohio River to Kentucky by flatboat with his family. He settled on Bear Grass Creek in Jefferson County. This is now part of the city of Louisville. Kentucky was in its early stages of development and could offer only an abundance of Land. Lawrence had become the owner of a large plantation (528 acres) and 113 slaves by the time of his death in 1817 in Jefferson County. Susannah died in 1819 or 1822. There is no record where they were buried. Lawrence?s Will, dated 2 March 1810, left the bulk of his estate to Presley, his youngest child. On 19 August 1818, the other 9 brothers and sisters filed an objection to the Will saying that Susannah and Presley had influenced Lawrence to exclude the others.

Susannah married Lawrence Ross about 1762. Lawrence was born on 5/15/1722 in Scotland, Dublin and died on 8/8/1818 in Louisville, Bulitt Co, KY at age 96.
172. Matthew Tolbert II, son of Matthew Tolbert and Mary Williston, was born in 1729 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA and died in 1812 in Morgan Co, GA at age 83. Another name for Matthew was Tabbert Talbert.
Noted events in his life were:
• Residence: Watauga Settlement: Watauga Settlement, NC. . Although his name appears at #166 on a list of land grants by North Carolina in the Tennessee Territory in 1778, Virgil Talbot claims that Matthew (II)’s move must have occurred before 1775, since he built the first gristmill in that area in that year. At that time, when he was about 46 years old, Mary 47, and his youngest child under ten, he moved to the Watauga area of what was then the western portion of North Carolina, approximately 150 miles from his Bedford County home. He settled on Gap Creek near its confluence with the Watauga River, and began the first gristmill in that area in 1775, presumably while pursuing his ranching interests. The area to which he moved was near the present-day city of Elizabethton, Tennessee.
Raised in the traditions of the Colonial Church of England in which his father was a staunch participant, Matthew (II) renounced that association and embraced the growing, enthusiastic flood to the fundamentalist, evangelical calling of the Baptist Church. He felt so converted to this belief that he became a minister in that church along with his immediate neighbors, James and John Edens. After his move to Tennessee, he founded the Sinking Creek Baptist church in Carter County and became its first preacher.
At the mouth of Buffalo Creek, Cleavers Barksdell, by 1778, settled on the west side, and Matthew Talbot by 1775, on the east side (see hereafter for details on this property). They built their residences and established their plantations along the banks of the Watauga River at this location. Adjoining their land on the south and on both sides of Buffalo Creek was Andrew Taylor, Sr.'s 450-acre land grant which survey had been entered for him by Christopher Cunningham, Sr. his immediate neighbor on the south and also on both sides of Buffalo Creek. Both men had brought their families from Virginia and built their homes at these locations. Christopher Cunningham's daughter, Jane married Andrew Taylor, Sr.'s eldest son, Isaac Taylor. Andrew Taylor Sr. was the progenitor of the famous Taylor family who have contributed so much to the history of Tennessee
The Watauga years, although lasting perhaps only a decade, were filled with adventure and change. When the Talbots arrived, Indian raids were common and a source of constant anxiety. Perhaps most unsettling, the young nation was deeply engaged in a revolution, trying to throw off the ties that had bound them to England for more than 170 years. In that struggle, many colonists chose to remain loyal to the Crown and the emotional toll that resulted surely was considerable. That, too, made life on the frontier more difficult.
Participating in this upheaval, Matthew Talbot erected a fort, known as Fort Watauga, on his property. As legend has it, John Sevier, the hero of the battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, assembled his men at Fort Watauga the night before marching to that successful battle against the British under the command of Colonel Ferguson. Matthew (II) is credited with having provisioned these American troops during their encampment there. The area is now in Carter County, TN, near the present town of Johnson City.
During this time four of Mathew (II)’s sons fought in the revolution. Matthew (II), too old to be in battle, served his new country and the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Patriotic Service as Commissary and provisioner. Although Matthew (II) probably was not engaged in the Battle, his four older sons were - Edmund and Clayton being too young to fight. Thomas was wounded there.
From Fort Watauga, the American force marched for miles through rain, snow and over treacherous terrain. By early afternoon they came upon the British. At 3 p.m., without having rested or had refreshment, the Battle commenced. In an hour, it was over and the British were laid decimate. The American losses were 28 killed and 62 injured; surely Thomas’ scalp wound was among that number.

Author: Lyman C. Draper, LL. D
Then mounting their horses, for the most of them were provided with hardy animals, they commenced their long and difficult march. They would appear to have had some trouble in getting their beeves started, and probably tarried for their mid-day lunch, at Matthew Talbot's Mill, now known as Clark's Mill, on Gap creek, only three miles from the Sycamore Shoals. Thence up Gap creek to its head, when they bore somewhat to the left, crossing Little Doe river, reaching the noted "Resting Place," at the Shelving Rock, about a mile beyond the Crab Orchard, where, after a march of some twenty miles that day, they took up their camp for the night. Big Doe river, a bold and limpid mountain stream, flowing hard by, afforded the campers, their horses and beef cattle, abundance of pure and refreshing water.(+) Here, a man of the name Miller resided who shod several of the horses of the party.
The Battle of Kings Mountain took place in October 1780. Its successful outcome for the Patriots marked the beginning of the end of the Revolution. Not only was the Battle important strategically, it was fought by British Regulars who were actually colonists who remained loyal to the Crown against their fellow colonists who were revolutionary Patriots. There are numerous web sites where the reader may find further details about the Battle of Kings Mountain and its peculiar importance to the American cause.
• Residence: : Wilkes Co, GA. It was during the sojourn in Watauga, in 1785, that Mary Hale Talbot, Matthew’s wife of thirty-two years died, and soon after the years in the Tennessee country came to an end. He was approaching sixty years of age by that time. Exactly what motives prompted him to forsake his life there is not known and he left no known record to reveal them. But around 1788 he moved with what remained of his family to Wilkes County, Georgia, where his younger brother John, who had become a very successful planter and political leader, had settled just a few years before. Furthermore, current scholarship has revealed that his half sister, Martha, and her husband, Barnabus Arthur, were either living there, came about the same time, or soon afterward. Whether it was Mary’s death, his ministry, the wanderlust of a pioneer, or family ties, the fact of his moving is certain. His brothers, Charles and James, had died during the American Revolution and his half-brother, Isham, had moved to Kentucky, and so there could very well have been some interest on his part in being nearer his sister and brother. In addition, a number of families from Bedford County and Campbell County in Virginia had relocated in Wilkes County, Georgia during and immediately after the American Revolution. He perhaps abandoned his ranching interests as he did the gristmill and pursued the ministry as his principal occupation.
Matthew (III), William, Edmund, and Clayton joined their father in the move to Wilkes County. Mary, Hale, and Thomas stayed in Watauga although Hale left for Kentucky after a short time and Thomas relocated further west in Nashville. The four brothers who accompanied their father to Georgia soon found brides and began families of their own. Matthew (III) and William married Lucy Bailey and Mary Bailey, perhaps sisters although no records have been found to substantiate that speculation. Clayton married Mary Crews and Edmund married Mary Harvey. Mary Harvey's father was a preacher, an occupation that her new husband was to follow for the remainder of his life.
Matthew married Mary Hale in 1752. Mary was born in 1727. Another name for Mary was Mary Haile.
Marriage Notes: In the 23rd year of his life, Matthew (II) Talbot married Mary Hale Day. She was almost 25, a widow with a young daughter. Mary Hale had married Thomas Day some years before and to them was born, Elizabeth. The circumstances surrounding Thomas Day’s death are unknown. Nevertheless, Mary was an available young woman and Matthew (II) found in her the wife with whom he would spend the next 32 years of his life and with whom he would father seven children.
Mary Hale was the daughter of Nicholas Hale and Ruth Ann Long. Nicholas Hale had been a business partner with Matthew (I) when the two lived in Maryland, that business having failed due to losses at sea. Indeed, they may have remained business partners after the move to Virginia and it is possible that Matthew (II) became a business associate with his father and father-in-law. Later the Hale family would be found in the Watauga area of what is now Tennessee, an area to which Mary and Matthew (II) would move sometime during the mid 1770’s. There exists a substantial body of knowledge to suggest that the Hales were among those early Baptists in Tennessee and may very well have been involved in the move to Tennessee by Matthew (II) and Mary. So it seems clear that Mary Hale and Matthew (II) Talbot had known each other during their youth. It is tempting to speculate about how he let her get away in the first place but that avenue probably leads to a dead end. His decisiveness when the second opportunity presented was quite clear.
Throughout the remaining history of the Talbot family, the Hale name appears frequently, both as the first name for the males and often as a middle name for the females. The spelling varies from Hale, Haile, Hail, and perhaps others. The official records contain the same kind of spelling variations.. The predominate usage is "Hale" because Edmund Talbot, the son of Matthew (II) and Mary Hale Day Talbot , used that spelling in his 1849 Memorandum of the Talbot Family , which is published in its entirety at this web site. We have not attempted in this work to choose one and use it consistently

He signed the instrument with a large W in the presence of James and Sarah Beck.

Wayne County News

ANCIENT SAVAGE LAND GRANT WAS SOLD FOR TAXES
The Savage grant, the first land granted to private individuals in Cabell and Wayne counties, is a proposition which won't stay downed.
The other day the writer of this article happened to get chesty about one of his ancestral names being named in the first land grant here. "I guess that's how part of my tribe came here, " it was remarked.
And right there another of those fond dreams was punctured. . .
"Nothing doing!" remarked the other fellow who takes pleasure in doing that sort of thing.
The cold truth of the matter is (and how like us yet, we thought) every bit of that first land grant was sold for taxes!
All of those ancestors who should have settled here, judging by the names, will [require] a little more research work. Not a single person entitled to a share of the Savage grant ever took possession of it.
The lands were sold after the War of 1812 for United States direct tax of two cents an acre. Cabell county, which included Wayne at that time, had to raise $1,546, 50, and the old soldiers or their heirs forfeited their tracts of 400 acres rather than pay the $8.00 accessed against it.
It had been decreed that if the land taxes were not paid by July 1, 1819, the land should be sold. In 1817 surveyors were directed to come here to make such surveying as might be necessary and to make appraisal reports, and the like.
General Edward W. Tupper was the surveyor. The commission was composed of George Summers, Lewis Summers, John Henderson, William Sterrett and Andrew Parks.
Their bill of expenses was $2, 351, ?55 and was accessed at $33 to each share of the 400 acres, which was in addition to the tax and equalization money. They reported the number of lots and their estimated value.
The suit had been instituted at Staunton, Va., and there in December 1818 the tract allotted to the original grant of William Buffington, 3,423 acres, was confirmed to Thomas and William Buffington, Jr.
The 800 acres assigned to Charles Morgan was turned over to Simon Morgan, Nancy Morgan, and to James Wells and his wife. There was allotted in 1775 to James Mccormick 1200 acres, owner of the shares of Timothy Conway, John Meade and James Ford. This tract was confirmed to Moses Mccormick, and others.
Lots 48, 58, 59 and 60 were allotted to Isaac LaRue Tot, the shares of N. A. McCoy.
Parts of the tracts assigned to Robert Tunstall, Robert Langdon, Joshua Jordan, Ed Evans, John Ramsey, Michael Scully and Marshall Pratt were confirmed to John Morrow.
The shares of James Given and Wm. Hogan were assigned to Robert Rutherford, later to John Morrow. Morrow also acquired the share of Mathew Donn and Richard Bolton.
David Spurlock acquired lot 26. Numbers 22 and 25, the shares of Wm. and Henry Bailey were confirmed to Charles Brown of Kanawha county.
The shares of Charles Smith were conveyed to Philip Easton and to Horatio Catlett. The shares of James Ludlow were conveyed to John Poage, that of James Latrol to John Poage, the shares of William Coleman to Achilles Rogers.
The shares of James, Samuel, Hugh, Paul and Robert Jones were confirmed to Henry Hampton and his assignees. The shares of David Gorman were confirmed to Manoah Bostick.
The tract of Richard Trotter was confirmed to Edward McCarty.
Some Early History
One of the earliest settlers, Jonathan Buffington, returned to his home on the Guyandotte and found the bodies of his entire family, except a little girl, lying on the ground scalped. He concluded his child was left to live and had been captured by the Indians. He followed them and he himself was taken and was held prisoner for years. He finally returned to Cabell county, but no trace of his baby girl has ever been found.
Thomas Hannon, who settled at Green Bottom, has been called the first settler in Cabell county. The first settler in the present limits of Wayne was probably Stephen Kelly, who erected his cabin at the point, at the mouth of Big Sandy, in 1798. Mathew Bellomy came in 1799.

General Notes: The family of Iiams or Ijams is distinctively Maryland, and perhaps no family has intrigued the historian more as to its derivation. It is not listed among the ancient names of Britain, although some believe that is a corruption of James or the Scottish Ian. In the seventeenth century the letters i and j were interchangeable, and the family and Christian name of James was often written as Iames. In the early period of the family in Maryland, however, there is a persistent double 'ii' which is certainly not characteristic of the English language. Double vowels are an unmistakable characteristic of the ancient Dutch and Flemish tongues, and there is more reason to believe that the origin is Dutch or Flemish rather that British. Unfortunately, the emigrant was unlettered and therefore no record of his signature is available to prove the precise manner in which he inscribed his name. The clerk of the Probate Court wrote his name phonetically as 'Eyonms' which would indicate that it was pronounced at that time with two syllables. It is related by the branch which settle in Western North Carolina that they became acquainted with the alleged Marshal Ney, of Napoleonic Army, who taught French in the neighborhood and that the name was French and that it should be spelled with the 'j'. The tradition is that the French teacher or the one-time Marshal Ney was smuggled out of France, whereby another man was substituted for him at the execution. It is known, however, that some members in Maryland had already adopted the 'Ij' before the North Carolina migration. The branches which settled in the southwestern Pennsylvania dropped the double vowel and became known as 'Iams'. The orthography of 'Jiames' is frequently found in the colonial period. As in all families the emigrant is the most interesting.
William Iiams was seated in the South River Hundred as early as 1665 and pursued the honorable occupation of planter. His entry into Maryland is rather inauspicious, that is, there is no record of his financing his own passage or being transported by another or his coming in as an indentured servant. All extand records style him as a freeholder. Furthermore, there is no record of filing a claim for land-rights. Besides the deed of gift from his father in law, he had other plantations at the time of his death. An early courthouse fire at Annapolis destroyed all recorded deeds, but many land owners brought their copies to court and had them recorded for posterity. By this manner the family of his wife was identified. 'Elizabeth Iiams relict of William Iiams deceased produced a deed of gift from Richard Cheyney and petitioned that it be recorded....Richard Cheyney the Elder of South River Planter on 29 May 1663 was granted Cheyney's Resolution lying on the south side of South River containing 300 acres...this tract he conveyed on 1 March 1674...for the consideration of natural love and affections unto my son in law William Iiams and daughter Elizabeth now wife of William Iiams with the consent of my wife of 400 acres of Cheyney's Resolution during their natural lives and after their decease to the male heirs of their bodies.'
Richard Cheyney, the father in law of William Iiams, was a large land owner and planter of the South River Hundred and had emigrated to Maryland about 1650, with his wife, Charity. The Cheyney family of ancient antiquity was ennobled in England, but through extravagance and being Royalists during the Civil Wars lost most of their property. There is every reason to believe that the Maryland emigrant was a scion of this ennobled family. He was lettered and the fact that he financed his own passage and that of his young wife is further indication of his social level. While many Marylanders today can claim descent from this early settler, in some manner the younger generations lost most of their property and were not inclined for public service or social attainment, with the result that the later history of the family from extant records is rather sketchy. The earliest entries in All Hallow's Parish are those of the Cheyney family and while the entries antedate the establishment of the parish, it is evident that the family kept their own records and at the time of the establishment of the parish as the State Church, the heads of the family had their births recorded for posterity. The first wife of Richard Cheyney died early in Maryland and he married secondly Eleanor and left a large issue her her - but the mother of Madam Iiams was of the first marriage which was certainly consummated in England. Later spelling of the name became Chaney and Cheney, but Cheyney was the accepted orthography of the 17th century. Radulfus de Caisned was an English subject shortly after the Norman Conquest - de Chainei was another ancient form.
William Ijams last will and testament was dated February 16, 1698/9, with Clement Davies, Richard Chaney, John Robertson and Robert Davis as the witnesses. It was probated in Anne Arundel County on November 10, 1703. The parish register records his burial as of July 29, 1703. To eldest son William 5 shillings. To daughter Elizabeth Duvall 5 shillings. To son Richard and heirs 100 acres of land near the Patuxent River in Price George's Co.
To young son George 100 acres of land on the south side of Western Run. To wife Elizabeth her dower rights. Residuary estate to children Richard, George, Hester and Susanna. His widow and executrix filed an account upon the estate on February 7, 1706/7, and reported a balance in her possession of 37 pounds, 8 shillings and 4 pence.
Hester Iiams, a younger daughter of William Iiams, was of a romantic nature and had an affair with Captain John Duvall, one of the leading Military officers of the Province, and the son of Mareen Duvall, the Huguenot. On April April 16, 1705, with the consent of his wife, Elizabeth, he made a deed of gift to Hester Iiams, 'spinster' of a portion of 'Burgess' Choice' which bordered the portion which had been sold to Richard Iiams. It contained a dwelling house, orchards, gardens and other improvements. It was to be retained by her during her natural life, or in the event of her marriage or if she had any other children, the improved land with all household effects was to be divided among the children of Hester Iiams then in being to share and share alike. The register of All Hallow's Parish records the following children of Hester Iiams: Anne Iiams, the daughter of Hester Iiams, baptized March 25, 1706; Elizabeth Iiams, the daughter of Ester Iiams, born August 15, 1703; John Iiams, the son of Ester Iiams, baptized September 13, 1702.

Concerning Daniel's death:"Early in the year 1708, Madam FERREE with her children and daughter-in-law made plans to leave for the "Island of' Pennsylvania and obtained a passport dated 10 march 1708.She was a widow. Her husband, Daniel, aka John, had died while they lived in Strasbourg. Details of his death are lacking, but one report says that he was lost at sea.We wonder under whatcircumstances.had he attempted to go to American earlier to join his friends? We do not know.
Another report referring to the husband as John, says he 'was among those slain during the insusrrection in France.'There were insurrections by the Huguenots following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.Which report could be correct?Could both be correct? The abridged compendium of American Genealogy says he died in exile."

Maria Warenbauer [Marie de la Warenbau, Marie de la Warrembere, Mary Warrenbur] was born about 1650 possibly in France. She died 1716 in Pequea Valley, Lancaster (then Chester) County, Penn. Maria married Daniel Feree, a Descendent of Robert Ferree who in 1265 founded noble family at Forchamps known variously as LeFerre, Ferree, Ferrie, Fuchre, Fierre, Firre and Ferie. Daniel was a wealthy silk manufacturer who located at Landau, France, along Rhine River, where some and perhaps all of his six children were born. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 by French King Louis XIV, the family fled to Strasbourg, Alsace. Later, they moved to Steinwiel, Bittingheim. Daniel was born c.1650 in France and died early 1708 in Bittingheim. After the death of her husband, Maria and Matthias Schliermacher led a group of 54 Huguenot and German Calvinists from the Palatinate, where they were in danger from the soldiers of French King Louis XIV, to Holland and then London. Reaching London in the summer of 1708, she went to see William Penn about buying land in Pennsylvania. Penn arranged for her to have a private audience with Queen Anne, who then recommended the members of the group be given naturalization status. Mme. Ferree's group bought 4,000 acres from Penn in the Pequea Valley in Lancaster County. Ferree family joined party of Rev. Joshua Kocherthal and set sail 10-15-1708 on "The Globe," arriving in New York 12-31-1708. They then went up Hudson River valley to Esopus (Kingston) and nearby New Paltz, site of a Huguenot settlement where some of the group had relatives, including Maria's son-in-law, Isaac Lefevre, two of whose uncles, Simon and Andries Lefevre, had been among the founders of New Paltz, N.Y. They stayed there until the spring of 1712 while their Pennsylvania land was being surveyed. That done, they moved to what became Lancaster County.

WHEREAS, Maria, Daniel Fuehre's widow, and her son, Daniel Ferie, with his wife and six children, in view of improving their condition and in furtherance of their prosperity, purpose to emigrate from Steinweiler, in the Mayorality of Bittingheim, High Bailiwick Germersheim, via Holland and England, to the island of Pennsylvania, to reside there. They have requested an accredited certificate that they have left the town of Steinweiler with the knowledge of the proper authorities, and have deported themselves, and without cause for censure, and are indebted to no one, and not subject to vassalage, being duly solicited it has been thought proper to grant their petition, declaring that the above named persons are not moving away clandestinely.
Commendations
That during the time their father, the widow and children resided in this place they behaved themselves so piously and honestly that it would have been highly gratifying to us to see them remain among us; that they are not subject to bodily bondage, the Mayorality not being subject to vassalage. They have also paid for their permission to emigrate. Mr. Fisher, the Mayor of Steinweiler, being expressly interrogated, it has been ascertained that they are not liable for any debts. In witness whereof I have, in the absence of the Counsellor of the Palatinate, etc., signed these presents, and given the same to the persons who intend to emigrate.

1870. Richard Cheney 1 was born in 1630 in England and died in 1688 in Anne Arundel Co, MD at age 58.
General Notes: One source states that 'Richard Cheney emigrated to Maryland about the year 1650. He eventually became one of the largest land owners on South River where he was seated on his 400 acre plantation which he called Cheney's Resolution. Source: Anne Arundel Gentry, 1st Edition - 1933: Section on Cheney Family:
The ancestor of the Cheney family of Maryland was Richard Cheyney who settled in the Province sometime before 1650. Soon after his landing he applied for land warrants and received first 'Cheney's Hill', lying on the South River. It is evident that he was single when he arrived in the Province, because between the years 1634 and 1682 no female by the name of Cheney was listed among the immigrants. He, however, married twice, but the name of his first wife in unknown.
About 1668 Richard Cheney married secondly Eleanor ----. The births of the following children are found in All Hallow's Parish. Four children were born to the first marriage: Richard Cheney, the elder, married Mary ----, Elizabeth Cheney, born 1652, married William Ijams, Mary Cheney, and Anny Cheney, born 1661, married John Jacob.
Seven children were born to his second wife, Eleanor: Thomas Cheney, Charles Cheney, Sarah Cheney, Katherine Cheney, Charity Cheney, John Cheney, and Richard Cheney - the last two being twins. By negotiating other warrants, Richard Cheney soon became one of the largest land owners in the South River Hundred. During 1653, he patented 'Cheney's Neck' with 110 acres, 'Cheney's Resolution' with 400 acres, 'Cheney's Hazard with 100 acres, 'Cheney's Rest' of 300 acres, 'Cheney's Purchase' of 100 acres of 100 acres, the total amounting to 1,100 acres.
After more than thirty years of residence in the Providence, Richard Cheney died at his seat on South River in 1685, having made a will some ten years before this date. Prior to his death he bequeathed to his son in law, John Jacob, 'Cheney's Resolution', lying on the south side of South River for the consideration of natural love of fatherly affection. In his will Richard, the oldest son, was named as executor and received in fee simple 'Cheney's Rest', consisting of 250 acres on South River. Thomas and Charles were to receive the remainder of 'Resolution' upon the attainment of their sixteenth birthday. Their brother, Richard, and their sister and brother in law, Anne and John Jacob, were named guardians. The daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Anne, received personalty. His wife was bequeathed merely her dower rights.
Forty-one years after his death a law suit developed over the parental dwelling and plantation. His son in law and daughter, John Jacob and his wife Mary, appeared in court as well as his widowed daughter, Elizabeth Ijams. John Jacob stated that on March 6, 1675/6, he happened to be at the home of Colonel William Burgess and a certain William Cocks drew up a will for Richard Cheney. He heard Richard Cheney dictate to William Cocks that the homestead was to be inherited by his two sons, Thomas and Charles. He saw Richard Cheney sign the will and testified that he, with Colonel William Burgess and William Cocks, signed their names as witnesses. Anne, the wife of John Jacobs, asserted that she heard her husband say many times that her father, Richard Cheney, made a will at the home of William Burgess. She was left five shillings but did not remember receiving them. Elizabeth Ijams practically made the same assertion as that of her sister Anne. Cheney family, p. 3: Harry W. Newman stated in his research paper, that he has visited Great Britian in an attempt to find parentage for Richard the Immigrant. He states that no definite proof has been found. "The nearest inference was a Richard Cheney who died in County Kent. He left a married daughter who had married George Smith of London, Gent. and two minor daughters which the court placed under the guardianship of their uncle, George Smith about 1652. The documents searched at the Preogative Court of Canterbury and other records, both source and secondary, do not reveal a son Richard, but employing imagination and the circumstances of the times thrown against the basic facts already known, and the fact that Richard Cheney, the Immigrant, arrived in Maryland before 1652, there may be more than a surmise that a son Richard had received his inheritance, married and departed for the English colonies."
Anne Arundel Gentry Vol 1, p. 291:
Richard Cheyney, the father in law of William Ijams, was a large land-owner and planter of the South River Hundred and had emigrated to Maryland about 1650, with his wife, Charity. The Cheyney family of ancient antiquity was ennobled in England, but through extravagance and being Royalist during the Civil Wars lost most of their property. There is every reason to belive that the Maryland emigrant was a scion of this ennobled family. He was lettered and the fact that he financed his own passage and that of his young wife is further indication of this early settler, in some manner the younger generations lost most of their property and were not inclined for public service or social attainment, with the result that the later history of the family from extant records is rather sketchy.
The earliest entries in All Hallow's Parish are those of the Cheyney family and while the entries antedate the establishment of the parish, it is evident that the family kept their own records and at the time of the establishment of the parish as the State Church, the heads of the family had their births recorded for posterity.
The first wife of Richard Cheyney died early in Maryland and he married secondly Eleanor and left a large issue by her. Later spelling of the name became Chaney and Cheney, but Cheyney was the accepted orthography of the 17th century.
Richard Cheney's will is located in the Prerogative Court records of Maryland in Liber 4, folios 311 - 312 (1688). Marriage Notes: THE NAPIERS OF KILMAHEW
The first known documented reference to a Napier in Scotland is in two charters of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, who lived at the end of the 13th century. This was John Napier, who was granted, by one of the charters, - "all that quarter lands called Kilmahew lying between Muydugwen and Archerreran." The full extent of these lands cannot be determined exactly at this time, but a "quarter-land" was usually a quarter of the area which could be tilled by an eight-oxen plough in a year, usually taken to be 104 Scots acres, thus a "quarter-land" was about 26 Scots acres (32.5 Imperial acres or 13.26 hectares). The ruins of Kilmahew Castle still stand on the north side of the present village of Cardross, which is four miles from Dumbarton on the Helensburgh road. Dumbarton itself lies 14 miles to the north-west of Glasgow. This John Napier was probably also the person listed in an Inhibition by Robert, Bishop of Glasgow, directed at Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, and his adherents, dated 24 August 1294. The present-day Cardross should not be confused with the Cardross where King Robert I (the Bruce) died in 1329, which is actually where the suburbs of Dumbarton, Castlehill and Kirktonhill, are today.
Kilmahew takes its name from St Mahew (or Mochta), a companion of St Patrick, who has been adopted as the patron saint of Cardross. A small chapel has existed there, on a piece of land known as Kirkton of Kilmahew, since earliest Christian times. By the mid-15th century the chapel must have been in ruins because it is recorded that it was rebuilt in 1467 by the then Laird of Kilmahew, Duncan Napier, and rededicated on the Sunday after the Ascension of that year by George Lauder, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. The chapel was not used after the Reformation and again fell into disuse. It was repaired and refurbished in 1955 and reopened and rededicated by Archbishop Donald Campbell of Glasgow (who was formerly Bishop of Argyll and the Isles), again on the Sunday after the Ascension. On that same Sunday in 1997, Colonel John Hawkins Napier III, of Montgomery, Alabama, USA, a direct descendant of Duncan Napier, took part in a service in the chapel to commemorate the 530th anniversary of the original rededication. Colonel John is the Lieutenant to the Chief, ie the head, of the Clan Napier in North America
The 13th century John Napier was probably the person referred to as "Johan le Naper del Counte de Dunbretan" in the "Ragman Rolls", the document which records all the Scotsmen who were forced to swear homage to King Edward I of England between the years 1291 and 1296. As well as John Napier of Kilmahew, two other Napiers signed the "Ragman Rolls", "Matheu le Naper de Aghalek (del Counte de Forfare)" and "Johane le Naper ---(tenant le Roi du Counte de Pebbles)". This shows that there were other Napier families in Scotland at the end of the 13th century. So far, nobody has shown that they were related to the Kilmahew Napiers. In fact, nothing is known about these other families at this time.
The above John Napier of Kilmahew is probably the same person who is listed as being one of the 26 defenders of Stirling Castle who was forced to surrender to King Edward I of England in 1304, and who is listed as a prisoner in Shrewsbury Castle from 23 August 1304 to Michaelmas 1305, and to whom the King ordered William de Bevercotes, Edwards Chancellor of Scotland, to return his lands on 10 October 1305.
There were 18 Lairds of Kilmahew until the last heir sold the last of the estate in 1820, diminished by having to be sold off to pay gambling and other debts incurred by profligate predecessors. The father of the last Laird emigrated to Virginia, USA. There were Napiers still living in Cardross in the latter half of the 20th century.
